Hosting Your Web Site on the World Wide Web

Sunday, March 18th, 2007

This is a one of the frequently asked question of an amateur webmaster. You will need a web server to host your web site on the internet. Buying and maintaining a web server cost so much money and it requires someone who knows what they are doing to maintain the server and the web-site.

Then a web-host is very good for you. It provide equipment and other technical programs that are required to build a customer a web-site. These hosts charge a monthly fee or yearly (It depends upon them) for the service of storing your web site and allowing your web site to be seen on the internet. Within that fee, it allows web-site visitor traffic to flow through their servers so people can view your site on the World Wide Web.

The physical web server does not reside at the consumers home or business which means that the web host services are designated as out sourced services. This means that the hosting organization that you choose has the responsibility to maintain your site structure, files and web pages.

Many web hosts provide excellent services that really assist individuals and business owners. All the weight of maintaining the host servers and application fall on the hosting company and not the individual and as a business owner, this is great because there are so many technical routines that you have to do daily to maintain a server. Some hosts provide 24×7 online or phone support and solve your problems in minutes. It is very good. .Then

Once you have bought your hosting then you ‘ll need to change name servers of your domain. To do so go to your domains control panel and then to modify name servers and fill the name servers field with the name servers given by your web-host .Then upload your files in to their server. If your site is too big then you have to upload your files through FTP otherwise it can be done by file manager provided by your web-host. You have to upload your files into a folder named as public_html or www. If you like to upload your files through FTP server then make sure your host provide FTP support.

Then you will need and FTP client to upload your files. There are many FTP client available there, free as well as paid. Mine favorite is FileZilla. once you have downloaded and installed FTP client the login to your web-server. You ‘ll need address, login and password to login. In address field fill something like this ftp.yourdomain.com. Change yourdomain to the name your your domain. :D And in Login field fill your login name and password in your password field. If it ask the port then fill 21. Then connect and when connected upload your files in public_html folder and you are done.

Thanks.

Choose The Right Web Control Panel

Saturday, March 10th, 2007

Hi, Do you know what is a web control panel and why does it matter to me when signing up for a web hosting account? Web hosting control panels are software packages that are installed on the web server where your account is hosted. The web control panel gives the web hosting customer much more control over his web hosting account. There are built-in features of the web control panel, you will be able to add and remove email accounts, set up FTP accounts, change passwords, add or remove MySQL databases, read your web statistics, install scripts, read web email and much more.

Most web control panels are very graphical and easy to use. Once you get used to one, it’s hard to go back. One web control panel that is used heavily in the industry is the “cpanel”. Here is a list of some good Web control panels:

1) Cpanel => It is one of the best, widely used and my favorite web control panel. It is the No.1 Control panel. It allows users to manage and monitor their web site. In cPanel users can manage email and ftp accounts, view site statistics, manage addon and parked domains, manage their files, backup their site, and more. This is easy to use and it is filled with some useful features.

Its key features are:

* Free Installation!
* Unlimited Domains per Server!
* Complete Server Administration Interface!
* Fully Featured Domain Owner Interface!
* Separate Server Administrator, Reseller and Domain Owner access!
* Free Language Support!
* Free Virus Scanner!
* Free GameServers!

2) DirectAdmin => It is on the second number on my own ranking. It is also very good Web control panel. It provide features like E-Mail Menu, FTP Menu, DNS Menu, Statistics Menu, FrontPage Extensions, Subdomains Menu, File Manager, MySQL Databases, Site Backup, Error Pages and much more. Is is also available for Adminsitartors and Resellers. Its main feature is that it support Live updates. There is no need to manually download, extract, and install DirectAdmin. It performs all updates automatically.

3) ZPanel => It is also very good promising web control panel. Moreover it is open source and Free to use and download. Its main features are installable scripts (like Fatastico), Easy bulletin board installation, server information to your clients, Total hits, currently viewing page, Easy chat service installation. Is the FTP server up? Is the MySQL server up? This is the most valueable feature I found in it :D , Whois feature, File Manager. More over it is Open Source. Why don’t you Download it?

When searching for a new web host, ask the web hosts to see a demonstration of the web control panel they use or if they have screen shots and a feature list available. There are many different types of web control panels available today and it’s always best to choose the one that best suits your needs. If you are moving from one host to another, it might be a good idea to look for one that offers the same web control panel. If you like the control panel, this step will save you a lot of time and hassle.

Thanks.

Choosing a better Web Hosting Provider

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

Hi, Today I am telling some ways to find a better web hosting provider. We all know that in the recent years finding a web hosting provider has been a huge problem. Everywhere you look there is a web host advertising their services. So where do you start? Is there a host that does it the best? The short answer is no. The best host is the one that fits all your needs. So lets put together a list of all the required items of a site, and from there we can start deciding on web-hosts. You should have a list of hosts ready to look through, you may have to start a fresh list soon :)

1. Website Theme
Your site theme can eliminate half of your host list at once. What kind of site will you be hosting? Many hosts don’t allow different sort of material such as adult, chat, IRC, music, and video content. Be sure to read each host’s Terms of Service and Acceptable Usage Policy to find if what you want to host is allowed. You may also find odd things such as large file sizes not allowed, and non-linked content not allowed as well. This is more common on the hosting companies that seem to offer so much for so little, a term called over selling. And to be able to control this “over selling” they have to find ways to physically limit you.

2. Disk Space
Next we come to one of the two simple concepts most users tend to get completely confused on, disk space. These days you see hosts offering over 100 gigabytes of disk space for your website, will you ever end up using it? Not really, sites usually consist of just text and images that take up less than 50 megabytes on average. Web hosting providers know this and offer outrageous amounts of storage because you will never end up using all of it. Technically if each user actually used 100 gigabytes of storage space, the hosting company offering this would probably go broke — this is where over selling comes into play.

3. Bandwidth
This is the other misconception, bandwidth. Bandwidth basically means — how much data will your site need to transfer? You commonly see packages with 500 gigabytes or even 5 terabytes of bandwidth, will you ever use this much? No, but most importantly, will your hosting provider actually let you use this much? Probably not, read the TOS and AUP again and you’ll most likely find a clause regarding CPU and Memory usage. You will most likely hit those limits way before you use all the bandwidth available to you (over selling). So how do you actually calculate the bandwidth you expect to use? Very simple, get the average web page size and multiply it by the hits you expect per month. So lets say we have a 100kb page, and it will receive 100,000 hits in a month (thats a lot of hits!), you’ll only end up using 10,000,00kb or 10 gigabytes of data. Probably a lot less than you initially expected.

4. Scripting
The two most popular scripting languages today are PHP and ASP/ASP.NET, and most sites today utilize these for dynamic pages. If you site uses a scripting language make sure the host of your choice supports it.

5. The Budget
Now we come to the most important piece of finding a web hosting provider, the budget. It’s extremely important that you have the right budget for your requirements. In the hosting industry you get what you pay for, if you go with a cheap host then you will get poor reliability and performance. Note that when reliability is mentioned, it’s not a reference to a host advertising “99.99999999999999999%” uptime, its the host’s actual uptime. There are many tracking services such as HyperSpin who track uptime. Many times its the cheap hosts who can’t live up to their promise. Dont fall in the prey of large disk space provider. see other features also.

Good luck with your hosting venture! My favorite web host is eWebGuru with 99.98% experienced by me from last few months. It is very cheap also.

Thanks.
